Mystery antenna.

Beitrag von SES (†) » 03.10.2006 15:20

Hi,
On this site:
http://historical-media.com/
I found the pictures attached. I cannot recall preveously having seen similar antennas in Wehrmacht units. They look like modern SIGINT (Funkaufklärung) antenna. Can anyone give a POS ID? Last picture is the unit crest.

Hi!

Indeed, these are strange. I agree that especially the antenna on pic 1 looks like a rather modern SIGINT/COMINT antenna. I'm not a military vehicle buff, but the truck has a 1950's appearance to me. Maybe pkbremen can help identify these?

Hi Mike,
I think if you look at all the pictures on the auction: http://historical-media.com/id1012.htm you'll see that they are indeed WW II Wehrmacht. And the antenna principle was known before WW II. (Goniometer). It is the same as used in the Wullenwever.

What about the unit?
The crest in the album is from the days in the RAD, which Herr Weinand belonged to from 1.4.39-30.8.39. The picture under the cartoon lists the postings of Herr Weinand during the war as well.
Here's what I can make out, slightly edited, my remarks in <>:
From 1.9.39 Training in Elbing as Funker, Fernsprecher und Fernschreiber
unitl January 1941 with 6th Division HQ
1.2.41 Versetzung nach Deutschland O.<picture ends>
m<z?>.b.V Kau<?> ((Siemens Meissen, Lorenz, Tel<picture ends, Telefunken, I guess>
1.5.41-30.9.41 Kursus Nachricht<seems to carry on past picture>
(Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, Meissen)
1.10.41 Berlin Lorenz, Siemens
1.10.41 O.K.H. Wa.Prü. 7 III D (Ent<Picture ends, Entwicklung?>
Erfindung) <unredable> Einheit 1/647
1.12.41 Desi <?> Stelle Hehl <?> R I 1

So the posting to Berlin seems to suggest that Herr Weinand was involved in the development or perfection of signals equipment in cooperation with civilian companies.

Greetings
Ingo

The crest is definitely RAD (Reichsarbeitsdienst) - Arbeitsgau I (Ostpreussen), Abteilung 1/102.

The truck beside the Opel blitz is a Büssing 3000 or 4500 with Kofferaufbau. It is definetely ww2.

Just a WAG:
could these be something like "Richtfunkkommunikationsantennen"? They seem to be always deployed in sets of min. two, so one is the Rec/ emit on one direction and the other is for a different "route".

Hi Chris,
Admittedly there is some resemblance with a RV system - a tall mast and a small antenna. But the RV antenna were flat not round.

Hi All

The photo are from the Heer not from
the Luftwaffe so maybe a other type
of experimental Richtfunk see also
"Hoffmann Teil II Page 553" and the
phrase z.b. V. = zur besonderen Ver-
wendung in the list means a very special unit.

Regards Jos

Hi Jos,
There ware indeed 2 mobile versions of the RV system the DMG 2T and DMG 7. But the RV system was highly directional so an omni antenna seems hardly applicable.
I think the best transliteration of zbV is provisional = an organization/unit, which is not part of the normal organization, but set up for the conduct of a specific operation. Many of the units participating in Weserübnung carried the suffix zbV, not because they were "special" but because the were part of a task force. Hopefully our German friends can enlighten us on this issue.
