A real odd-ball Stellung.

Beitrag von SES (†) » 27.05.2005 08:59

Hi,
Came across this picture this morning. It must be from a Flum.-Stellung notice the W-R is equipped with a Kuh FuG 25 interrogator, but the 150 cm searchlight in the foreground is odd and so is the entire setting in a hot climate in a field camp with tents. Has anyone got a bright idea as to the location? Africa or Southern Russia?

For me it´s a typical part of northern Germany: Gras in the foreground, flat countryside, an avenue with (probably) appel trees in the background. This can be anywhere between the Dutch border and east Prussia, for instance in Münsterland, Magdeburger Börde, Leipziger Bucht, Neumark, Elbing/Pomosinien.
And even in Münsterland: Hot summers are possible.

Hi,
Thanks for the responce. I failed to notice the trees. However, tents like that in a Himmelbett Stellung !? And notice the wooden construction in the background.

A Himmelbett-Stellung?

Beitrag von EricZ » 27.05.2005 13:46

Hi SES,

your hint is very important. What about the possibility of a woodden shelter for a part of the Himmelbett-Stellung.

In the case it should be a Himmelbett-Station, we just have to localise the post in the corresponding parts of Europe...

One question from my side: wherefrom do you know that this picture was taken in a Himmelbett-Stellung.

Hi Eric,
The W-R was only used for nightfighter control and in a few rare instances for heavy Flak batteries in Flak towers. Since the W-R on the picture is Kuh equipped and it is not in a Flak tower :) it must be in a Himmelbett Stellung QED.

WR in 2./ s. Flak-Abt. 134 in Bottrop-Grafenwald

Beitrag von EricZ » 28.05.2005 10:16

Hi SES

In addition to the following part of your message:
The W-R was only used for nightfighter control and in a few rare instances for heavy Flak batteries in Flak towers.
and to broaden our horizons:

2. Batterie / s. Flak-Abt. 134 in Bottrop-Grafenwald was equipped not just with a Würzburg TD but from August 1942 also with a Würzburg Riese FuSE 65.
Source for this information: Ludger Tewes, Jugend im Krieg, Von Luftwaffenhelfern und Soldaten 1939-1945, Essen 1989.

In the book you can find some amazing pictures...

Hi Eric,
Thank you very much. What caliber guns was 2. Batterie / s. Flak-Abt. 134 equipped with? and are there other examples of Flak batteries equipped with W-R apart from the ones in Flak-towers?

Hi Leif,
Thank you very much. So my picture could be from a Flak battery, which would explain the 150 cm searchlight.

Freunden

A Flakbatterie hat no "own" W.R. ,exept of the Flakturms, there were
placed in the batteries for better defence, but they "owned" by the
Flakabteilungen or Flakregiments .
